Seventy-six public information officers in various government departments and agencies in the State are yet to remit the fine imposed on them by the State Information Commission (SIC) for not providing information sought under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

Many of them had moved the High Court against paying the fines. The 76 defaulters were fined a total of Rs.12 lakh. In the past five years, the SIC had imposed a total of Rs.23.58 lakh in fine. This was revealed by the SIC in response to an application made by RTI activist Ambadi Gopalakrishnan of Karumalloor. Those fined for violation of the RTI Act included an Additional Secretary in the Home Department and the State Public Information Officer at the Raj Bhavan.
