As many as 73,839 children below the age of five were administered the polio vaccine as part of the Pulse Polio immunisation programme in Pathanamthitta district on Sunday.

Of the children who were administered the vaccine, 191 belonged to parents from outside the State, officials sources said.

The Health Department had opened a total of 1,038 booths in the district for the smooth conduct of the nationwide polio eradication programme.

The booths were kept open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at various primary health centres, sub-centres, anganwadis, bus stations, and the Thiruvalla railway station, besides other public places.

K. Sivadasan Nair, MLA, inaugurated the programme by administering the vaccine to a child at a function at General Hospital in Pathanamthitta.

A. Sureshkumar, municipal chairman, presided over the function.

Volunteers of the Health Department will conduct door-to-door visits in the next two days to identify and administer the vaccine to those children who were not taken to the polio booths on Sunday, the sources said.
