With the arrest of two persons, the Anti-Narcotic Squad of Kollam City Police Commissioner Debesh Kumar Behera on Sunday busted a major gang allegedly involved in peddling ganja.

The duo was identified as Sulfikkar, 20, and Shibu, 30.

Sub-inspector G. Gopakumar said 5.5 kg of ganja was seized from the duo. It included 600 small paper packets each containing 2.5 grams of ganja. He said each packet was sold at rates ranging between Rs.100 and Rs.150. The clientele comprised college students, migrant labourers, and autorickshaw drivers.

Mr. Behera was tipped off about the peddlers by a classmate of an engineering college student who regularly purchased ganja from the gang, Mr. Gopakumar said.

Circle Inspector Suresh V. Nair said the ganja was sourced by the arrested duo from a Kottarakara-based gang that brought it from Tamil Nadu. He said Sulfikkar had been arrested in two similar cases in the past. One was in 2012 when he was arrested by the Thenmala police with 5 kg of ganja and the other was in August last year when he was arrested by the Kollam Excise with 8 kg of ganja. Both these cases are pending in court.

Shibu had been in jail for four years after being convicted in various criminal cases, included two cases of burglary, Mr. Nair said.

The two were produced before a magistrate court and remanded to the Kollam District Jail.
