Police check 3,000 vehicles on Saturday night
More than 450 arrests were recorded by the police on Saturday during a combing operation across the city from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
As many as 171 people were arrested for creating public nuisance in an inebriated condition, while 129 people had court warrant cases registered against them.
The police also arrested 166 people who are accused in various cases under investigation.
The combing operation, led by Deputy Commissioner (Law and Order) A. Srinivas and monitored by City Police Commissioner P. Vijayan, also saw the arrest of two notorious criminals — Mahesh, alias Tarzan Mahesh, and Manoharan. The police said Mahesh was wanted under the Goonda Act, as he was an accused in various murder attempts. He was arrested by the Peroorkada police. Manoharan, an accused in several Abkari cases, was declared absconding earlier. He was arrested by the Valiathura police during the operations, in which teams from all the police stations in the city took part.
More than 3,000 vehicles were checked. Action was taken against 132 people for drunk driving; 68 people for irresponsible and dangerous driving; and 1,500 people for not carrying the necessary documents. Action was taken against 156 people for smoking in public.
The police conducted surprise checks and raids on areas where there was a concentration of migrant labourers; 143 lodges; and 47 colonies in different parts of the city.
Many of those arrested were let off on station bail depending on the charges against them and on whether the warrants against were bailable or not, a senior police official said.
