ALAPPUZHA: Forty fishermen who were lost in the sea after their boats had been damaged in heavy rain and winds were rescued on the Alappuzha coast through the efforts of the Coast Guard and the Navy on Wednesday. Officials said the fishermen had ventured out to the sea on seven boats around 4.30 a.m. They were left fighting for lives by hanging onto the remains of boats and plastic cans.

One managed to contact a relative near Arthunkal via cellphone, setting off an alarm on the shore.
