PATHANAMTHITTA: The Palliyoda Seva Sanghom (PSS) that organises the Aranmula Valamkali in river Pampa at Aranmula has said that a total of 39 Palliyodams (snakeboats) will participate in this year’s snake-boat regatta on August 30.

Addressing a prèss conference here on Wednesday, PSS president K.G. Sasidharan Pillai, secretary Prasad Verumkal and treasurer Sankaranarayana Pillai said that ‘Punnamthottom’ and ‘Edappavoor’ were the two new snake-boats participating in the annual event this year.

T.K.A. Nair, Prinicipal Secretary to the Prime Minister, will light the ceremonial lamp, marking the beginning of the inaugural ceremony at 1 p.m. on August 30.

Union Minister for Tourism Ambika Soni will inaugurate the snake-boat regatta. Minister for Home Affairs and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will preside over the inaugural ceremony.

Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran, Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran, Travancore Devaswom Board president C.K. Guptan, Nair Service Society general secretary P.K. Narayana Panicker, SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan and all the MPs and MLAs from the district will address the inaugural function.

The event will begin with a procession of snake-boats at 1.30 p.m. The boat race to be held in ‘A’ and `B’ batches will begin at 2.30 p.m. A total of 26 snakeboats will take part in ‘A’ batch and 13 boats in ‘B’ batch. The winners will be presented with the Mannam Trophy and R. Sankar Memorial Trophy.
