KOCHI: The Muvattupuzha police on Friday arrested three persons of an eight-member gang of robbers. The police said that some members of the gang were operating in the State since 1997 without being detected.

Those arrested confessed to committing 52 cases of robberies in different parts of the State. Those arrested were identified as Ravi, 36, Jaganadhan alias Rajan, 50, and Ram Babu, 42, all from Uthamapalayam taluk in Theni district, Tamil Nadu.

Vital information was collected from those arrested regarding the possible location of other members and also on the modus operandi of the gang, said Ravada Chandrasekhar, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ernakulam Range.

Among the crimes confessed by the accused, there were cases like stealing Rs.1,60,000 and gold ornaments from the house of Siddique in Muvattupuzha and stealing 25 sovereigns gold ornaments from the house of Varghese in Kothamangalam.

According to the police team led by C.A. Dominic, Dy.SP, Muvattupuzha, the first accused Ravi was spotted by local residents of NGO Quarters at Piravom Road, Muvattupuzha. They raised an alarm and the police arrested him at 5 a.m. on Friday.

On interrogation, he said there was an arrangement between them to meet at Perumbavoor. Accordingly, the police party arrested the other two at 8 a.m. All the accused were presented before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Muvattupuzha.
