After being on the run for more than a year, two among the accused wanted for assaulting an engineering student surrendered before the City Police on Thursday. Geevarghese John, a student of Gnanamani Engineering College, Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, was tortured while he was travelling by train on January 16 last year by a group of eight. Akhil Babu and Justin John, the two who surrendered before Amoose Mamman, Assistant Commissioner of Police, District Crime Records Bureau, moved the High Court for anticipatory bail and was asked to surrender.

The accused were students of Salem College of Engineering and Technology. The group used to waylay students at bus stands and railway stations to rob them of ATM cards and wallets, the police said.

The police have registered a case for attempt to murder and robbery against the accused. Those who surrendered were remanded to police custody till February 4. The petition moved by the fourth accused in the case to quash the inquiry is still pending before the High Court.

The two are wanted for assaulting an engineering student last year.
