Kasaragod: A 38-year-old man from Rajasthan was on Wednesday sentenced to 15 years rigorous imprisonment by a local court here for smuggling 710 gm of heroin in November 2005.

District Additional Sessions Judge K. Vijayan awarded the sentence to Ismail Ajmere, hailing from Chittorgarh, under the provisions of the narcotics drugs and psychotropic substances Act and imposed a fine of Rs.2 lakh. Ajmere would undergo two more years in prison if he failed to remit the fine amount, he said.

The court acquitted another accused, Mohammed Shafiq, owing to lack of evidence. The seizure was made by the Narcotics Control Bureau officials at the railway station here soon after Ajmere got down from the Netravati Expressearly on November 19, 2005. While the officials seized 305 gm of heroin from his possession at the station, 405 gm was found concealed inside his shoe heels. PTI
