Driver escapes from the scene

Thiruvananthapuram: The rural police have seized over 1,190 litres of spirit, estimated to cost Rs. 1.5 lakhs, which was being transported to the capital in a Sports Utility Vehicle from Kozhad, near Avanakuzhy, under Balarampuram police station limits on Sunday. According to the police, the spirit was stored in 34 plastic cans, each having a storage capacity of 35 litres.

On the basis of suspicion, it was the Highway Patrol that intercepted the vehicle at Aralummoodu on the NH 47 around 3 p.m.

On being chased by the police, the driver of the vehicle abandoned the vehicle in an open field and fled.

On inspecting the vehicle, the police found spirit stored in plastic cans. The vehicle was lifted using crane and later was shifted to the Balaramapuram police station.

The police have registered a case under 55(A) and 8(1) of the Abkari Act.

According to the police, the Ernakulam registration number of the seized vehicle seems to be fake.
