Thiruvananthapuram: The 10-day-long Urus festival at the famed Beemapally Dargah Sheriff here took off on Tuesday in an atmosphere of religious fervour. Prayers and the traditional flag hoisting ceremony marked the commencement of the festival.

Beemapally Jamaat president A. Sainulabdin hoisted the ceremonial flag in the sprawling premises of the Dargah Sheriff. Earlier, Beempally Imam Abdul Khadar led the prayers and the `Pattanapradakshinam,' perambulation around the shrine. A large police posse was deployed in the area.

Muslim religious scholars will deliver discourses during the festival.

The Jamaat will also conduct the marriage of 12 women from various communities.
