‘Several important issues had to be discussed’

Perhaps for the first time, the general body meeting of the zilla panchayat scheduled for Thursday at 11 a.m. had to be postponed for want of quorum.

Of the 58 members of the House — 36 members of the zilla panchayat, seven taluk panchayat presidents who are nominated members, nine MLAs, three MLCs and three MPs — only 28 were present. Even after waiting for more than an hour there was no quorum.

Sumangalamma Gubaji, president of the zilla panchayat, announced that the meeting had been postponed to March 13.

Reason

Several members were of the view that the council staff might not have reminded the members about the meeting, in the wake of the general strike and that is why they did not come to the meeting.

During an informal discussion, some members expressed concern over the postponement of the meeting as important subjects such as steps to overcome scarcity of drinking water and drilling of borewells had to be discussed.
