Rules have been flouted by selecting artistes who are on the panel

The three-day Dharwad Zilla Utsav to begin here on Friday has come under the scanner for allowing organising committee members to perform during the utsav.

Sources said the utsav committee has selected artistes without paying attention to its own rules, which state that organising committee members will not be allowed to perform at events. The move has come under criticism, as it has deprived professional artistes of a chance to participate.

Anil Desai, programme executive at All India Radio, Dharwad, is the chairman of the sub-committee for comedy show and Mahadev Sattigeri, teacher at Government Urdu School, Uppinabetageri, is a member of the same committee. The committee is in charge of selecting for the comedy show. Both Mr. Desai and Mr. Sattigeri have enrolled themselves as artistes for the programme.

Expressing reservations over the decision, artiste Mallappa Hongal said Mr. Desai and Mr. Sattigeri had flouted the rules framed by the utsav committee.

He asked if they were above rules and added that professional artistes like him had been sidelined. Mr. Hongal was not allowed to participate, based on the reasoning that he was a member of the comedy show sub-committee. It is learnt that members in the sub-committee for the cinema show and folk show have been provided the chance to speak at a seminar and sign at a music show respectively.

The stage show sub-committee is facing criticism for allowing ‘Green Army’, an environmental organisation, to stage a play. In the beginning, the organisation’s application was rejected but they were included later following pressure tactics, sources said.
