Alleging that the Shaadi Bhagya scheme in its present form would not only insult the Muslim community, but would also alienate them from other communities, Janata Dal (Secular) member Zameer Ahmed Khan on Wednesday urged the government to withdraw the scheme.

Pointing out that only 400 couples a year were eligible for getting the benefits under the scheme across the State, he offered to bear the entire cost of the scheme. “How are you going to select them from the vast population? It is an insult,” he said.

Reacting sharply to this, Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa asked Mr. Khan not to display his wealth in the Assembly and wondered if he would file IT returns for these expenses.
