An atmosphere of bonhomie prevailed in the district on Friday with people from all sections of society celebrating ‘Yellu Amavasya’ to pay obeisance to the mother earth and standing crops.

Although it was not a general holiday, the district wore a festive look with government offices and banks reporting thin attendance. Those who could not afford to go to farm fields spent the day with their family members at public places such as gardens and parks.

Many people made traditional food items using green vegetables and fresh green pulses and shared them among friends and relatives.

Farmers offered prayers to standing crops in the morning before starting the celebrations.
