scornful: Janata Dal (S) leader S. Bangarappa addressing a press conference in Davangere on Tuesday.

Janata Dal (Secular) leader S. Bangarappa said on Tuesday that he might have committed a few mistakes, knowingly or unknowingly, when he was Chief Minister, but he had never indulged in the kind of irregularities the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had been charged with. Mr. Yeddyurappa had betrayed the people of Karnataka, he said.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Bangarappa said that apart from being charged with receiving huge payoffs to show official favour to mining companies, Mr. Yeddyurappa was involved in grabbing fertile land from farmers through the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board under the garb of development and getting them allotted to his relatives, after denotification. Mr. Yeddyurappa had opened many institutions through which he was receiving ‘illegal gratification' from different lobbies, Mr. Bangarappa alleged.

Complimenting the former Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde for the tremendous efforts he had put in for compiling his report on illegal mining in the State,

Mr. Bangarappa said that the people had realised the true colours of Mr. Yeddyurappa.

Referring to the naming of State president of the Janata Dal (S) H.D. Kumaraswamy in Mr. Hegde's report, Mr. Bangarappa said the former had only recommended issuance of mining licences to a few applicants but did not receive payoffs or show any favour to mining companies.

Mr. Bangarappa urged Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda to immediately drop Minister V. Somanna from the Cabinet.
