World No Tobacco Day was celebrated at Shakuntala Memorial Hospital in Hosur here on Friday with a lecture on the effects of tobacco. In an awareness programme organised by Cipla, in association with the hospital, consultant physician Vijay Gadagi spoke on how to save one’s kith and kin from passive smoke. He also spoke about how nicotine replacement therapy could help quit smoking. Several patients and postgraduate medical students participated in the programme.

Also, the SDM College of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Dharwad, conducted various activities to mark the day. An awareness programme to educate patients was held. Pamphlets were distributed and students performed a street play on the occasion. Srinath Thakur, principal, and Krishna N. Burde, Head of the Department of Oral Medicine, welcomed the State government’s decision to ban gutka in the State.

Meanwhile, the city-based Sadbhavana Samiti, an organisation with people from different walks of life welcomed the State government’s move to ban gutka.

In a release, president of the samiti K.H. Jituri, vice-president R.N. Joshi, secretary Abdul Kareem and treasurer Jeetendra Thakkar thanked the Chief Minister for the move.
