Contract workers engaged by the Belgaum Institute of Medical Sciences, staged a protest here on Thursday against “irregularities” in disbursement of wages.
Spokesman for the employees Krishna Holkar said 23 candidates were appointed as group D contract workers at the State-run medical college. They had been working for over four years for a monthly wage of Rs. 2,700.
The government had fixed minimum wages as per which the workers at BIMS should get Rs. 5,250 a month, he said, urging the government to direct the BIMS authorities to implement the order on minimum wages. Wages should be distributed to workers directly, rather than through an agency. They should be given Provident Fund benefits, the employees added.
