Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will lay the foundation stone on March 3

Bijapur: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will lay the foundation stone of the velodrome on March 3.

The velodrome will come up on 3.5 acres of land on the outskirts of Bijapur city. Sources in the district administration told The Hindu that the move would fulfil the long-pending demand of cyclists and sportspersons.

Though Bijapur and Bagalkot districts have ample number of cyclists who have brought laurels to the State in national and international competitions, they do not have a proper place to practise cycling and depend on national highways to hone up their skills. In 2001, eminent sportspersons and coaches C.M. Kurni and Padtare submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner urging the official to establish a velodrome in Bijapur for the benefit of cyclists in the region. The project was approved by the State Government on June 31, 2003. Though for some time it was said that it might come up in Bangalore, the State Government recently decided to establish a velodrome in Bijapur.
