`3,500 liquor shops functioning without valid licence in Bhadravati taluk'

SHIMOGA: Women members of the Bhadravati Anti-Liquor Forum staged a dharna on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday demanding that illegal and unauthorised liquor shops in Bhadravati taluk be closed.

In a memorandum submitted to the district administration, the demonstrators pointed out that most of the 3,500 liquor shops that existed in the taluk were functioning without the valid licence. They also alleged that liquor was being sold through these illegal liquor shops at rates higher than the one fixed by the Government.

They regretted that the authorities concerned had not taken any steps to check the sale of liquor through unauthorised shops despite repeated representations made to them in the last one month. They warned that they would intensify their agitation if the Government did not respond to their request immediately.
