Ill-treatment by alcoholic husband is said to have forced her to take the extreme step

DHARWAD: A woman administered poison to her three children and consumed it herself at Garag village, near here, on Thursday.

While the woman and a three-year-old child died, the other two children, including a boy and a girl, are battling for life at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital in Hubli.

According to preliminary investigations, “ill-treatment” by her “alcoholic” husband forced the woman to take the extreme step.

The police gave her name as Kavita Basavaraj Chauhan (25) who was running a tea shop near TELCO factory on the Puna-Bangalore Road near Dharwad.

The woman and three children were immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital in Dharwad. But the woman breathed her last in a few minutes.

Three-year-old Keerti breathed her last when he was being taken to KIMS hospital. Five-year-old Deepak and one-and-a-half-year-old Paravva have been admitted to KIMS Hospital.

Sources in the hospital said that their condition was critical. Basavaraj Chauhan, husband of Kavita, is a rickshaw driver and he allegedly used to beat her up every day, according to the police.

Based on a complaint filed by Kavita’s father, the Garag Police have registered a case and arrested Basavaraj.
