MANGALORE: A 24-year-old woman died in a hospital here on Tuesday after prolonged hospitalisation following childbirth. Her family has alleged that she died owing to medical negligence.

In a complaint to the Bantwal Town police on Wednesday, Naveen Menezes, alleged that his wife, Celestine Laveena Menezes, developed complications during childbirth because she was not attended to on time.

Blaming the gynaecologist concerned for delaying treatment to his wife, Mr. Menezes alleged in his complaint that Ms. Menezes was made to wait for nearly three hours when she was having labour pains.

Reacting to the allegations, a hospital spokesperson said that Ms. Menezes had a rare complication. “I am also a gynaecologist and I have not seen such a case in my 22 years of service,” he said.

The police have registered a case under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code on the charge of “causing death by negligence” against the gynaecologist concerned.
