‘Centre should have taken State governments into confidence’
‘Hike will have financial implication on common man’
Members of Dalit Vimochana Sene stage ‘rasta roko’
SHIMOGA: Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a demonstration here on Friday to protest against the “steep” hike in the prices of petrol, diesel and domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders.
State unit secretary of the party M.B. Bhanu Prakash, who addressed a meeting at Gopi Circle as part of the demonstration, criticised the Union Government for what he termed as “financial terrorism” by increasing the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG gas cylinders. He said that the hike in the prices of these items would have a serious financial implication on the common man as it would result in the increase in the prices of foodgrains and other essential commodities.
The Union Government should have taken the State governments into confidence before announcing the hike in the prices of petroleum products, he said and added that its “arbitrary” decision was not only unfair but also uncalled for.
Mr. Bhanu Prakash took exception to the Congress president’s instruction to the party-ruled States to reduce sales tax on petroleum products.
“It is nothing but an attempt by the Congress to divide the State governments on the issue,” he said. When the BJP-led NDA Government increased the prices of petroleum products it did it without causing any hardship to the common man, he claimed. Mr. Bhanu Prakash warned that the protests would intensify if the Union Government did not withdraw the hike immediately.
President of the city unit of the BJP S.N. Channbasappa, president of the district unit of the BJP Girish Patel and president of the district unit of BJP’s women’s morcha Suvarna Shankar spoke. President of the Shimoga City Municipal Council M. Shankar was present.
Meanwhile, members of the Dalit Vimochana Sene staged a ‘rasta roko’ at the Tunga Bridge to protest against the hike in the prices of petroleum products.
