Nearly 15 days after Kannada actor Radhika Pandit complained of a prankster using her mobile phone number to send messages to other actors, the Subramanyanagar police arrested a 20-year-old employee of a call centre in Whitefield.
The accused has been identified as Abhishek, a resident of Kolar.
The police said Abhishek had Ms. Pandit’s number as he had worked with a few Kannada serial producers some time ago. He then convinced an employee of a mobile service provider store that the actor had lost her phone and wanted the SIM to be deactivated, and to give him a duplicate SIM for the same number. He then gained access to numbers of others in the industry and exchanged messages with them, often asking them to share more contacts.
Ms. Pandit only became aware of the matter when family and acquaintances spoke of receiving strange texts from her. She filed a complaint on July 12.
The Subramanyanagar police traced the accused based on mobile phone tower data and arrested him on Saturday. He has been booked for cheating and impersonation, and was remanded in judicial custody.
The police have asked service providers to ensure proper verification before issuing SIM cards.
