The Contract Workers Welfare Board will meet in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss the report to be submitted by the task force on effective utilisation of funds available with the State governments for the welfare of construction workers.

Union Labour and Employment Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge, who will be chairing the meeting, told presspersons in Gulbarga on Sunday that the task force had been asked to submit its recommendations on how funds available for the welfare of construction workers should be utilised. The task force would submit its report in the board meeting.

Mr. Kharge said that cess collected from builders and contractors for the welfare of construction workers and their family members was available with the State governments. “Unfortunately, except for a few States like Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, no other State Government has evinced interest in initiating measures for the welfare of this neglected section of society using the funds.”

Mr. Kharge said it was the responsibility of the State governments to implement such schemes.
