Scores of weavers staged a demonstration in front of the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC) head office here on Tuesday to press for the fulfilment of their long-pending demands.
Vice-president of the Akhila Karnataka Kaimagga Nekar Sangha N.J. Malavade said the demands of weavers had not been fulfilled despite several memorandums and reminders.
Addressing the protesters, Mr. Malavade criticised the State Government's move to procure school uniforms from Rajasthan. “When weavers in the State are finding it difficult to get one meal a day, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri is procuring school uniforms from Rajasthan, pushing weavers here to the streets,” he said.
He said the sangha would urge the Government to immediately stop procuring uniforms from Rajasthan and get these from weavers in Karnataka.
The protesters submitted a memorandum urging the Government to take immediate steps to help weavers.
Some of their demands included increase in wages for weavers; immediate suspension of work on the KHDC headquarters in Hubli as the layout plan incorporating space for the houses of weavers hadn't been included; and inquiry into irregularities at KHDC.
