Members of the district unit of the State Unaided Educational Institutions and Employees' Association began a fast-unto-death here on Thursday. They are demanding that the Government provide salary grants to private unaided schools and colleges.

The protesters alleged that although a dharna was being held in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office since June 25, there had been no positive response from the Government. Hence, the association had decided to start the fast-unto-death.

State president of the association Rajanahalli Manjunath said that teachers of unaided educational institutions had been deprived of various government facilities for years. The members had decided to sacrifice their lives to get the demands fulfilled, he added. Members of the association arrived from other districts to participate in the agitation.
