Reader's delight: The fourth Pustaka Parishe is being held on October 30 at the Volleyball Ground in Basavanagudi.

This is a book fair with a difference: nobody buys or sells but everyone gets to go home with a free book.

The fourth Pustaka Parishe, organised by Srushti Ventures and Anubhavashale, is being held on October 30 at the Volleyball Ground at Nettakallappa Circle in Basavanagudi.

The idea, which took shape four years ago, is to spread the joy of sharing books, said Nagaraj Navunda, secretary of Srushti.

Some one lakh books will be on display at the parishe, where people can check out and choose any one book they like. This freebie is for all visitors.

Donate books

If people wish to donate books, which they have already read, they may do so at the parishe so that the reading culture spreads, the organisers said. Different genres of Kannada literature will be available. Entry is free. However, the fair does not offer any opportunity either to sell or buy books.

Mr. Nagaraj told The Hindu that the parishe is held once in six months. The moment one event is over and done with, the process of collecting books starts all over again. Initially, this was confined to a close group of friends, but then it became bigger and bigger, involving the public too. It was same with the books also. Initially, it was confined to Kannada books, but the circle grew bigger with people donating academic and non-Kannada books.

Many writers such as K.S. Nissar Ahmed, Siddalingaiah, Shashi Deshpande, G. Venkatasubbaiah and others too backed this heart-warming enterprise by donating books.

Students benefit

Srushti keeps the academic books on its premises and intimates nearby educational institutions to make use of them.

Today, many students who benefited from this gracious gesture have become its patrons, participating in its cultural activities, Mr. Nagaraj said.

The previous three parishes were held at the Srushti office and saw moderate attendance ranging from 4,000 to 12,000. This time however, the organisers, expecting a huge turnout, have booked the Volleyball Ground at Nettakallappa Circle.

The parishe will be on from 10 a.m. till 5 pm. Those interested may volunteer at the event.
