HASSAN: The dharna launched by farmers of Dasarakoppalu received a shot in the arm on Friday when the Hassan Zilla Vipra Vedike came out in support of them and appealed to the Government not to acquire agriculture land in and around Hassan. The farmers have been on protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here since Monday.

Vedike president C.S. Krishna Swamy, who sat along with the protesting farmers, said the Government had issued notifications to acquire 521 acres of land at Dasarakoppalu, near here. If this happened, farmers would lose their livelihood. Mr. Swamy said about 20 years ago the Government acquired several thousand acres of land for housing colonies in Deve Gowda Nagar, S.M. Krishna Nagar, Sathyamangala Badavane and Thattikere Badavane, but work was still incomplete.

Acquiring land at Dasarakoppalu for another housing colony did not make sense, he said.

He appealed to the Government to cancel the two notifications so that farmers could live peacefully.
