`They have failed to take up works under the rural job guarantee scheme'

GULBARGA: Villagers of Kusnur and Bhupal Tegnur in Gulbarga taluk, led by the Dalit Panthers of India, picketed the office of the Gulbarga Taluk Panchayat in the city for more than two hours on Monday.

They demanded disciplinary action against the secretaries of the two gram panchayats for their "failure" to take up works under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

The villagers, including many women, came in a procession and tried to gatecrash into the taluk panchayat office, but were prevented at the main gate by a strong posse of police personnel. Later, the villagers staged a dharna in front of the main gate. In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, the villagers said the secretaries had failed to provide employment to the needy under the programme, despite the availability of funds.

It demanded a probe and also action against the Bhupal Tegnur Gram Panchayat secretary in connection with the alleged misappropriation of over Rs. 3 lakh provided under the development funds for the panchayats.

List of beneficiaries

They demanded that the list of beneficiaries under the Ashraya, Ambedkar, and Indira Awaz housing schemes for 2005-06 and 2006-07 be immediately published and approved.
