BANGALORE: Vijaya Bank has set June 23 as the timeline for finalising the list of farmers eligible for debt waiver under the Debt Waiver and Relief Scheme announced in the Union Budget 2008-09. The bank has already started the due diligence exercise with a series of branch visits by the chairman and managing director and senior executives of the bank, a communiqué said.

Chairman and managing director Prakash P. Mallya visited the Dobbespet branch, about 50 km from here, on Friday to review the progress in the scheme implementation.

He interacted with the local farmers and the public about the benefits from the scheme.

The bank has already issued guidelines with regard to the scheme, which have been displayed at the branches, and conducted a series of sensitization programmes.

“We are covering about 93,000 farmers under the scheme, of which around 78 per cent belong to the small and marginal categories. The waiver will benefit the farmers to the tune of Rs. 313 crore and, more importantly, will make them eligible for fresh loans,” Mr. Mallya told journalists.
