The vertical split in the Bharatiya Janata Party, with one group supporting Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda and another group supporting the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, was obvious at the 4th anniversary celebrations of Peetharohana of Jagadguru Shri Mahant Swami of the Veerashaiva Lingayat Panchamsali Jagadguru Peeth at Shri Maharishi Valmiki stadium here on Saturday. Mr. Sadananda Gowda was the chief guest on the occasion.

But for the presence of Minister for Municipalities and Local Bodies (Urban Development) Balachandra L. Jarkiholi (Arabhavi) under whose leadership the programme was conducted, MLAs Raju Kage (Kagwad), Abhay Patil (Belgaum North) and Duryodhan Ihole (Raibag), Agriculture Minister Umesh V. Katti, the former Minister Laxman Savadi, MPs Prabhakar Kore, Suresh C. Angadi, and Ramesh V. Katti, believed to be strong supporters of Mr. Yeddyurappa were conspicuous by their absence.

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of the function, Mr. Sadananda Gowda admitted that there were disturbing developments in the party. There cannot be any political party without internal problems. But he was trying his best to administer the State with forbearance and patience, he said.

With the usual smile on his face, Mr. Sadananda Gowda wished Mr. Yeddyurappa a happy journey as the latter is scheduled to go on ‘teerth yatra' to north India.

Mr. Gowda reiterated that the Cabinet would be expanded only after the budget session and the bypoll to Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency. He added that he understands the difficulty of running the Government with only 25 Ministers.

On porn row, he said the Opposition was running away from its responsibility of playing a constructive role on the floor of the House.

The Chief Minister said construction of Suvarna Soudha would be completed within a month and Speaker K.G. Bopaiah would inspect the works next week.

Later, addressing the gathering at the function, Mr. Gowda said he would consider the demand of the Panchamsali community people to include their caste under ‘2A' category.

Mr. Jarkiholi said the Government need to pay attention for the development and welfare of the Panchamsalis.
