The president of the Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha, Vatal Nagaraj, on Monday led a novel protest against the latest increase in the price of petrol.
He expressed his ire by riding a tonga indicating that frequent hikes in petroleum price would soon force the public to start using tongas and bullock carts. Mr. Nagaraj got into the cart near the KSRTC bus-stand and went by Ashoka Road and the Kote Anjaneya Swamy temple.
He said the Union Government had repeatedly increased the price of petroleum products citing market forces. Due to this, the condition of the middle class, economically weaker sections and the salaried class had become pitiable.
Mr. Nagaraj said the situation was going from bad to worse but the Government had not made any concerted efforts to resolve the issue.
Mr. Nagaraj urged the State Government to come to the rescue of the people by reducing the cess and levies imposed on petroleum products.
