Tiziana Repepi plans to take up the challenging task
MYSORE: Three Italian publishers have offered to translate and publish Vachana Sahitya in Italian, said Tiziana Repepi, an Italian national currently pursuing research at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) here.
She was speaking at "Thingala Angaladalli" organised by the Mysore District Sahitya Parishat on Saturday.
Dr. Repepi said research on Vachana Sahitya was needed before translating it into Italian. There were plans to give Vachana literature of three different Vachanakaras to three publishing houses.
On her attraction to Vachana Sahitya, she said, "I was attracted to Vachana Sahitya after reading the English translation of the literature brought out by A.K. Ramanujan. I felt the same could be translated into Italian to make Italians aware of the unique literature."
Dr. Repepi, who has translated several Kannada books into Italian, said the translation of works from Kannada into Italian was tough as several words and expressions in Kannada were not present in Italian. The translation of Yashwanth Chittala's works was a challenging job, she said.
An Italian national, Dr. Repepi has been staying in Mysore to pursue her research in Kannada at the CIIL under folklore expert Kikkeri Narayan. She has translated works of Masti Venkatesh Iyengar and Yashwanth Chittala into Italian. At present, she is studying Vachana Sahitya.
A release from the Mysore District Kannada Sahitya Parishat said that Dr. Repepi could be compared to the likes of R.F. Kittle and B.L. Rice. She had been invited by the parishat for an interaction.
Dr. Narayan and parishath president Manasa were present on the occasion.
