Utilise funds or face action, officials told

Kodagu Zilla Panchayat president Shanteyanda Ravi Kushalappa on Thursday called upon the officials to ensure that all funds allocated to the zilla panchayat were utilised by the end of this fiscal.

He was presiding over a progress review meeting of the zilla panchayat programmes till January 2011 at the Old Assembly Hall here. If any official of a department allowed lapse of funds, he or she would he held responsible, Mr. Kushalappa said. If the officials faced problems concerning the execution of works, they should approach him at the earliest.

Problems such as non-availability of sites for construction activities could be tackled immediately if it was brought to his notice, Mr. Kushalappa said.

He sought to know the details of various works that were under progress in each department and funds released and spent for the purpose.

Executive Officers of taluk panchayats should take steps to build own buildings for the gram panchayats, he said.

Mr. Krishnappa expressed displeasure that funds granted to gram panchayats were not being spent properly. Funds up to Rs. 50 lakh could be spent in each of the gram panchayat for construction of own buildings, housing for the panchayat development officers (PDOs), purchase and use of computers and broadband.

Mr. Kushalappa asked the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, N. Krishnappa, to convene a workshop involving the PDOs to know the programmes being implemented in the zilla panchayat.

He told the Forest Department officials to show interest in implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme effectively in the district.

Deputy secretary of the zilla panchayat Basavarajappa, Executive Engineer of the Panchayat Raj Engineering wing Keshavamurthy, DDPI Ramaswamy, District Social Welfare Officer Rajesh Gowda, gave details of the progress made in their departments.

The functioning of several departments came under review.
