Upa Lokayukta Subhash B. Adi has expressed surprise and shock over the style of functioning of officials in Bellary district.

“Should the public come and remind you of your duties?” he asked the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) while hearing a petition seeking direction for clearing the encroachment of land belonging to a government primary school, and construction of a compound wall, for which funds had already been released.

“What are you people (officials) doing? Is it not your duty to protect and safeguard government property?” he asked, and directed the DDPI to get the encroachment cleared and compound wall constructed within three months. Mr. Adi, who was here to receive petitions and hear public grievances since Wednesday, disposed off a majority of petitions on the spot, after calling for explanation from officials and directing them to initiate proper action , wherever necessary.

Mr. Adi appeared perplexed over the tahsildar of Sandur not acting on the orders passed by the Assistant Commissioner (his immediate senior officer) with regard to initiating action against a gram panchayat member, who is also a contractor, for dumping garbage on a government land in Sandur taluk.
