Taluk panchayat members keep main office closed, stage dharna

GULBARGA: Members of the Gulbarga Taluk Panchayat, supported by zilla panchayat members, locked the main office of the taluk panchayat here on Monday. They also staged a dharna in front of the main gate demanding restoration of powers to the panchayat.

Taluk panchayat president Vijaykumar M. Biradar and vice-president Hanumantha Rao Gowda, accompanied by other members of the panchayat, Opposition leader in the zilla panchayat Subash Rathodand and zilla panchayat member Shivaraj Bhasgi locked the office.

The main demand of the protesters is restoring to the taluk panchayat the powers it enjoyed prior to the Belur Declaration. The Government should give back to the taluk panchayat powers regarding distribution of houses under the Ashraya, Ambedkar and Indira Awaz schemes, they said.

They demanded that the Government should provide an alternative to the Swarna Gram Rozgar Yojna for, it had become redundant after the inclusion of Gulbarga district in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme last year. The Government should create a technical cadre for taluk panchayats.

Grants for taluk panchayats should be increased to facilitate more development work in rural areas.

They demanded that honorarium for taluk panchayat members be increased.
