Bangalore: The evergreen forests of Western Ghats were under being destroyed by “unscrupulous elements,” said C.P. Muthanna, president of Coorg Wildlife Society.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, he said that political parties should stop “interfering” with the Forest Department.

Speaking of the reinstatement of G.A. Sudershan as Conservator of Forests in Kodagu, Mr. Muthanna said this had been done despite the fact that he was under investigation.

The Forest Department began the inquiry earlier this year following a complaint from the Coorg Wildlife Society. Mr. Sudershan was removed from his post during the Central rule and was posted back on July 11, after the new Government took office, Mr. Muthanna said.

“He was reinstated despite an assurance from the Chief Minister’s office that Mr. Sudarshan’s case had been sent for review to the Chief Secretary and the Principal Secretary, Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment,” he said.

Kodagu’s evergreen forests saw massive destruction during the seventies and eighties when they were leased out to private plywood companies.
