Members of the district unit of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists took out a procession and staged a dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Friday in protest against the alleged attacks on journalists of a Kannada news channel by supporters of Housing Minister V. Somanna in Bangalore.

They alleged that attacks on journalists had increased in the last four and a half years, and the ruling BJP was directly responsible for them. These attacks clearly indicated that some vested interests were trying to curb the freedom of the media.

There were many instances of mediapersons being attacked by the supporters of the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in Mangalore, Bangalore and other places for trying to report their activities, which was against democratic principles.

Stringent action

Therefore, the authorities concerned should take stringent action against those involved in the attacks, they said. The agitators submitted a memorandum in this regard to Governor H.R. Bhardwaj through Deputy Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri. T.K .Basavaraj, H. Lakshman, Ravishankar, Ahobalpathy, Yalnad Manjunath and others participated.
