Umaprakash elected Mayor of Davangere

B. Lokesh, also a BJP leader, is the Deputy Mayor

DAVANGERE: Umaprakash of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been elected Mayor of Davangere and B. Lokesh of the party has been elected Deputy Mayor.

In the elections held here on Friday, Ms. Umaprakash defeated Congress councillor Thippamma, while Mr. Lokesh defeated N.K. Ismail, the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate.

Both Ms. Umaprakash and Mr. Lokesh secured 24 votes each while their opponents secured 14 votes each.

The BJP has 24 councillors in the 41-member corporation. The Congress has 11 and the Janata Dal (S) has five. One councillor expired a few days ago. The Congress and Janata Dal (S) entered into an alliance to fight the two elections. Surprisingly, two Congress councillors, Simeenne Mallesh and Shafiq Pandith, abstained.

In the morning, three other women who were in the race for the post of Mayor, tried to make last-minute efforts to win. Soubhagya Mukunda, Susheelamma and Nagarathnamma made all-out efforts to find favour with the BJP councillors.

G.M. Dhananjay, Divisional Commissioner, conducted the elections.
