A 21-year-old student of Manasa Rehabilitation and Training Centre at Pambur in Udupi was part of the 11-member floor hockey team from India which won a gold medal at the Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Pyeongchang in South Korea from January 29 to February 5.

Sister Thelma Lewis, Principal of the Centre, told The Hindu on Tuesday that the Indian team that included Sunita Lobo had bagged the gold medal at the Special Olympics in South Korea. The team would be reaching New Delhi from South Korea on Thursday. Ms. Lobo would reach Udupi district on Saturday. She would be welcomed at Katapady on National Highway 66 and brought in a procession to Pambur.

“We are all very happy over Sunita’s performance. We never really expected the gold medal. The competition in floor hockey is tough,” she said.

Ms. Lewis said the Manasa Centre had received more support from the philanthropists than government. “The government should give more importance to providing better sports facilities to special children,” she said.

The students from the centre had won 10 medals in international-level meet for special children. These included five gold, four silver, and a bronze, Ms. Lewis said.

Ms. Lobo is the fourth child of the late Peter and Helen Lobo. She was admitted to the Manasa Centre in June 2003. After joining the Centre, she started showing interest in sports.

She had participated in the floor hockey selection camp held in Simla in July 2011. Later, she was selected for the national camp in September 2012. She had participated in the national preparatory camp held in Himachal Pradesh from January 3 to 8. She was selected as a member of the floor hockey team from India to participate in South Korea.

Ms. Lobo’s other achievements include bagging a gold medal in relay and a silver medal in 100 metres in the national-level special games in 2009-10.
