Minister for Municipal Administration and Wakf Qamar-ul Islam has said that all urban local bodies have been directed to utilise 3 per cent of the 22.75 per cent funds available with them for welfare programmes for persons with disabilities.

In a brief address after distributing 15 specially designed two-wheelers to persons with disabilities, including a woman, here on Monday, Mr. Islam said that the government had initiated several measures for the welfare of persons with disabilities and efforts were on to provide a mandatory reservation in employment to such persons in all departments.

Lauding Congress MLC Allamprabhu Patil and the former Minister Revu Naik Belamgi for releasing funds from their Legislator’s Development Funds for purchasing the vehicles, Mr. Islam urged the other legislators to emulate Mr. Patil and earmark 10 per cent of their development funds to such noble causes.

While 13 vehicles had been purchased at a cost of Rs. 69,500 each with the assistance provided by Mr. Patil, two had been purchased with the funds provided by Mr. Belamgi.
