The two-day district-level Kannada Sahitya Sammelan will be held at the Government Model Higher Primary School in Uppinangady from February 1. N. Narayana Shetty Shimantooru, an Yakshagana expert, will be the president of the sammelan.

Well-known writer Kamala Hampana will inaugurate the sammelan. District in-charge Minister C.T. Ravi and former Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda will participate.

Dakshina Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura tod reporters on Tuesday that the sammelan would look into issues that affect the nation. The first session will be on “Dakshina Kannada Zille: Badukina Stityentaragalu mattu Sahitya” which will be chaired by columnist and journalist Jogi. This will be followed by poet’s meet and interaction with Mr. Shimatooru. The first day ends with an unique cultural programme called “Kavya Kathana Ranga Prayooga” where in works from Pampa to the modern day writers will be presented.

The second day will start with Saxophone recital by Krishnaprasad and group from Uppinangady, which will be followed by ‘bhavageete’ by Swarna R. Bhat. There will be a talk by Yakshagana artiste Kumble Sundar Rao on Swami Vivekananda. This will be followed by a discussion on water, land and development issues of Dakshina Kannada. The valedictory function will be chaired by art critic M. Prabhakar Joshi. It will end with yakshagana “Jatayu Moksha” by members of Yakshagana Kendra from Udupi.

Mr. Kalkura said the sammelan provides an opportunity to exhibit and sell handmade and homemade products. It will also provide stalls for writers to display and sell their books. There will be a programme to felicitate scholars namely Kaintaje Narasimha Bhat, N. Sukumar Gowda, D. Sadashiva Bhat, S.D. Pejattaya, Father William Robert D’Silva, V.B. Artikaje, and Keshava Jogittaya.
