The police have arrested two college students on charges of extortion and blackmail in Kumta on Thursday.

The arrested, along with two other accused who were absconding, had been accused of blackmailing a tutorial owner.

The arrested are Mayur alias Mahendra Dayanand Sannamane (22), Roshan Devadatt Naik Devaramane (20), who were BBA students. The two absconding youth had been identified as Kirthi Ullas Naik, son of a police constable and Gurudatt.

According to the complaint lodged by Anil Krishna Dhoke with Kumta police station, he had been blackmailed for several months by the accused, who had taken Rs. 7,000 from him. Anil, who is running a tutorial in Kumta for the past several years, was targeted by the accused after more students attending his English classes increased and spread rumours about him. The accused allegedly took him to a lonely place few months ago and forced him to sign on some papers.

According to the complaint, the accused had started harassing Anil by demanding Rs. 10,000. Frustrated by the blackmailing, Mr. Anil lodged complaint with the police.

On Thursday, the police laid a trap and arrested the accused when they arrived at Anil's tutorial to receive the money. The police have booked cases under section 384 and 34 of the IPC. The police said they would arrest the other two soon.
