Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) has said the government ‘requested’ the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and BMRCL to address the issue of bad roads along Namma Metro network.

An official release here said: “The condition of the road in west of Chord Road (from Modi underpass to Soap Factory) and Maha Kavi Kuvempu Road (from Navarang Circle to Malleswaram) has received the attention of the government. The High Power Committee of the metro project has approved the proposal of the BMRCL to improve these roads and share the cost with BBMP equally.”

The corporation has engaged Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Ltd. (KRIDL) to repair the road. The agency has already mobilised machinery at the site and started preliminary cleaning work, testing of material and shifting of barricades.

The BMRCL said the road is expected to improve in about three to four months.

Hardship

The print and electronic media, including The Hindu, had been highlighting the plight of road users on the Namma Metro alignment ever since the condition of roads began deteriorating. Civil works and traffic movement on the shrunken roads had mutilated them.

The Save Bangalore Committee had on September 25 held a mega demonstration on Maha Kavi Kuvempu Road and threatened to lay siege on the road if the BMRCL does not restore it.

BMRCL Managing Director N. Sivasailam, at a recent interaction with members of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry here, categorically refused to take responsibility over the bad condition of the roads.

He had said the BMRCL’s mandate was to build the metro network and not to build roads. It is the duty of the civic agency concerned, he had said.
