They allegedly didn't obtain approval before utilising grants

Two professors of Karnatak University, Dharwad, have been suspended for alleged irregularities in utilising grants provided by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Registrar S.B. Hinchigeri toldThe Hindu on Tuesday that V. Jagadish of the Department of Anthropology and Prema Halligeri of the French section of the Department of Foreign Languages had been suspended pending inquiry.

He said that according to procedure, it was mandatory to obtain administrative approval to utilise the grants. But neither Mr. Jagadish nor Ms. Halligeri had obtained the university's approval before utilising the grants.

When a fact-finding committee looked into the matter, it was felt that a detailed inquiry was required. They were both suspended and asked for an explanation, he said.

“Both of them have not followed the guidelines. Now they claim they weren't aware,” Mr. Hinchigeri said.

He said that once the inquiry was over, the university would see whether the matter could be resolved at the Syndicate level.

Otherwise, further action would be initiated accordingly to law, he said.
