SHIMOGA: Two persons of Balegaru village of Sagar taluk in the district were allegedly socially boycotted following which the village remained tense on Sunday. Sources told The Hindu that last year residents of Balegaru and Bellenne had quarrelled over the laying of the road passing through Balegaru. The VDC president Parashuram had asked each of the families in Balegaru to contribute Rs. 200 for the settlement of the quarrel. Mid-day meal worker Susheelamma reportedly refused to pay.. In response, Mr Parashuram directed the SDMC president Ramappa to terminate her services.

However, Mr Ramappa said he would not terminate her. Enraged by this, Mr. Parashuram allegedly imposed a social boycott on Mr. Ramappa and Ms. Susheelamma under the ‘Kattu” rule (Kattu is a traditional system of social boycott in the Deevaru community).

Mr Parashuram said that a fine of Rs 1,000 would be levied on people who communicated with the two. Ms. Susheelamma filed a complaint with the police.

A police team visited Balegaru village on Sunday and took a written statement from Mr. Parashuram that he would not do such things again.
