Belgaum: Two persons were killed and 25 others injured when a maxicab overturned on the Pune-Bangalore Highway near Muktimath in Bhootaramanahatti on Tuesday.

The two have been identified as Dastagir Mathumsab Badebhai(50) of Shahbandra in Hukkeri taluk and Satyappa S. Kamate (30) of Bhootaramanahatti in Belgaum taluk.

Among the injured, two persons suffered serious injuries and are undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit in K.L.E Hospital in Belgaum.

The group, members of families displaced three decades ago by the Hidkal dam and awaiting rehabilitation since then, was on their way from Yamkanmardi in Hukkeri to Belgaum to submit a memorandum demanding land for the affected families.

Recently, the Government had promised them land after a yearlong agitation by the families in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.

Accordingly, four months ago, the Government had sanctioned 143 acres of land in Toralli village of Khanapur taluk to the families, but the land had not been distributed yet as the tahsildar had been allegedly delaying it.

On May 21, the Kranti Sena, which spearheads their struggle, had threatened to launch another agitation.
