Two international flights were diverted and a dozen flights delayed because of heavy fog at the international airport at Devanahalli near here on Monday morning.

An Etihad Airways flight arriving from the U.S. was diverted to Colombo and a British Airways flight to Chennai owing to poor runway visibility at the airport. Other flights were delayed by 15 minutes. Normal operations resumed after 6.30 a.m., Bangalore International Airport Ltd. (BIAL) sources told The Hindu .

Incidentally, fog has been causing flight delays almost regularly at the airport for four months every year. Fog is normally anticipated from November 15 to February 15, between 3 a.m. and 8.30 a.m., at the airport.

However, during this season it has been foggy since October. As many as 13 flights were delayed on October 16, the first such occurrence this season. The period from December 2 to February 15 is considered bad conditions for flight departures and arrivals at airports across the country.

But, unlike other major airports in the country, The airport at Devanahalli has a CAT-I Instrument Landing System but it that is “not efficient” in bad weather .
