BANGALORE: Two men died and two were injured after their car veered off the road and fell into the Varthur Lake on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday night.

The police said the four, from Rajapalya in Mahadevapura, who were on their way home, had consumed alcohol. While they were driving on the Varthur Tank Bund Road around 11.30 p.m., the car fell into the lake which is full of weeds and contaminated water.

While the police and the public rescued Jayadev and Satish, the two others died of suspected suffocation, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East) Mallikarjuna Swamy, who supervised the rescue operations, told The Hindu on Wednesday. The dead were identified as Srinivasa (34) and Manjunatha (29). The dead and the injured were all landlords and real estate agents, Mr. Swamy said. The car was fished out of the lake around 2.30 a.m. by the police and Fire and Emergency Services personnel. The K.R. Puram traffic police have registered a case.

Meanwhile, the residents of the area and the police complained that the civic authorities had not erected guard pillars on the road skirting the lake.

Guard pillars had to be compulsorily erected on the tank bund roads to indicate the edge of the road, a senior police official said.

As the traffic volume on the Varthur Tank Bund Road has increased manifold in recent years, the civic authorities recently widened and asphalted the road. However, they failed to erect guard pillars. If such measures had been in place, the accident could have been averted, the official said.
